Trends in Dishwashers
Is it time for a new dishwasher?Houzz has published its 2017 Kitchen Trends Survey. For homeowners planning kitchen renovations, dishwashers are the most likely to be first on the list for replacement. It really isn't a big surprise considering all the changes in dishwashers over the years. Here are the top trends in dishwashers in our view.Sani-CycleHomeowners are increasingly concerned with sanitation, particularly in the kitchen. Some new dishwashers have sani-cycles that are certified by the NSF which requires that the water is heated to 155 degrees fahrenheit and kept there for a certain amount of time. This feature can be particularly important when someone in the home is sick, or if there is a baby to care for.Energy and Water SavingsWhile dishwasher manufacturers are all keen on having the EnergyStar label, some dishwashers are more energy efficient than others. They work with smaller highly efficient motors that run quieter (and longer) to get dishes clean while running at whisper quiet sound levels. In addition, though dishwashers may have long run times, they actually use far less water. That's one reason why they are more energy efficient because a big part of a dishwashers energy usage is the cost of heating the water.QuietToday's open kitchens make it critical that dishwashers run quietly, and appliance manufacturers tout their "whisper-quiet" dishwashers. In my opinion, to be considered quiet, a dishwasher would have to operate at a decibel rating in the 40's. The really quiet dishwashers are often in the low 40's with a -

Save Water When Washing
Tips to help reduce your water usage when washing clothes.Since over 20% of the average family's water use comes from doing laundry, reducing water usage in the laundry room can have a big impact on your total household water consumption. Here are a couple of tips to save water and save money in the laundry room.Wash full loads.Whenever possible washing a full load is far more efficient and saves water over partial loads. It will also save electricity or gas when drying clothes.Wash less frequently.Nobody's suggesting that we should wear dirty clothes, but really how often do we need to wash those denims when we only wear them for light day to day use? Remember Grandma talking about Monday laundry day, and that was the only day laundry got done? The next time we're loading the washer, let's take a good look at the clothes. If a high percentage of the laundry looks like it might be just fine to use another day or two, then seriously think about saving the time, the work, the energy, and water usage by laundering less frequently.Use Energy-Saving WashersSuprisingly, there is not much else we can do to save water in clothes washing except to use a high-efficiency front-load or top-load washer. Basically, that means if we're really concerned about saving water we should not be using a traditional top-load washer with an agitator post in the middle. Agitator type top-load machines will use up to 3X the amount of water that a high-efficiency -

How Your Dishwasher Works
3 Ways Dishwashers Get Your Dishes CleanThere are three processes that contribute to your dishwasher getting your dishes clean. They are: Mechanical, Thermal, and Chemical actions. These processes work together to assure you the best possible cleaning results that will make your dishes shine.MechanicalThe motor and pump of the dishwasher force water through the holes in the spinning spray arms, creating powerful streams of water that peel stuck on food particles from your bowls, dishes, glasses, pots, pans, and silverware. Dishwasher insulation, and quiet, smooth-running motors and pumps enable your dishwasher to powerfully scrub your dishes with a minimum of noise.ThermalDepending on the cycle selected, water is heated to 120-140 degrees (even more for a sani-cycle). Hot water not only breaks down the detergent (see below), it also helps loosen and remove food particles from the dishes, and carries the debris through a filter and down the drain. During the rinse cycle, fresh, clean water leaves your dishes sparkling. If selected, an NSF sanitizing cycle adds more heat; 155-160 degrees for a prescribed time. A drying cycle, usually heat assisted, finishes the job. ChemicalDetergent, and rinse agent are released into the dishwasher at the proper times in the wash or rinse cycles to mix with the hot water. The hot water and detergent mix together enabling the water to "scrub" stuck on food particles from the dishes, glasses, and silverware. In addition, the detergent helps suspend the dirt in the water so that it does not redeposit on the dishes, -

Beware of your Fabric Softener
4 Fabrics to Keep Away From Fabric Softener Shared from Good Housekeeping Most of us think fabric softeners are good for ALL fabrics. Not so. Though we all know fabric softeners will...well, make fabrics soft. Perhaps, we're not aware that fabric softener should not be used on all materials. Here's a list from *Good Housekeeping: 1. Microfiber I just love microfiber, but I had no idea that using fabric softener when microfiber is in the wash could remove the effectiveness and the durability of the microfibers. 2. Athletic Sportswear Evidently, athletic gear frequently has "wicking technology" that will absorb sweat when you are exercising and help keep you cool. However, the coating that fabric softener leaves on your athletic wear will not allow "wicking" to occur, thus eliminating the absorption and cooling benefit of your athletic clothing. 3. Flame-Retardant Clothing Kids' sleepwear is required by law to be flame-resistant, but washing flame-resistant sleepwear with fabric softener actually makes them MORE flammable. 4. Towels How nice is it to dry off with a nice, warm soft towel? Nice, huh? But, when you use liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets, you'll be reducing the moisture absorption factor of terry cloth (and similar fluffy fabrics). Appreciate this content? Dishwasher Cycle Times
Dishwashers to get your dishes clean quicklyAvailable now at Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterOne of the most common issues that comes up on dishwasher reviews is the amount of time that it takes for a dishwasher to complete a full cycle. Customers report their frustration with dishwasher cycle times that can exceed three hours.Over the last decade dishwashers have radically reduced the amount of energy that they use, the amount of water that they consume, and at the same time dishwasher noise levels have dropped dramatically. However, these fantastic improvements have not occurred without tradeoffs. For example, instead of washing dishes in both racks simultaneously, several dishwasher brands now have spray arms that alternate washing dishes on the top rack and then switching to the bottom rack. With only half the dishes getting washed at any given time the sound levels go down, but naturally the wash times go up.So now, to address the consumer complaints of extended wash times, some dishwasher brands have quicker wash cycles for lightly soiled dishes or glasses.Jenn-Air touts a one hour wash for quick cleaning on the new Jenn-Air Trifecta™ dishwashers.Frigidaire's new dishwashers with the OrbitClean® wash system include a 30 minute Quick Wash.Miele trumps both Jenn-Air and Frigidaire with a 19 minute cycle on its model G7859. How can they get dishes clean with such a short wash cycle? Well, this Miele model is a commercial dishwasher that works on 208v. It's really designed for a community center, a day care facility, etc. -
