Tips for Periodic Appliance Checkups
Maintaining Your Major AppliancesHere are some tips to maintaining, cleaning, and inspecting your washing machine and clothes dryer. You can save time and money by following this advice, and avoid breakdowns, or hazardous situations.Washing Machine It's a good idea to periodically check and replace the fill hoses on your washing machine. If you have rubber hoses, you should consider replacing them with braided stainless steel hoses. It is recommended that you replace your washer hoses every 3-5 years. While you are back there, take a look at the electrical connection. The plug needs to be firmly in place, the cord connection to the washer should have a restraint, and should not evidence any corrosion or burn marks. Also, you should periodically clean the inside of your outer washer tub. Whirlpool makes a cleaner called Affresh for this purpose. There are also a variety of home remedies including using combinations of bleach, vinegar, and/or baking soda. You can discover these cleaning remedies online, or just look on the aisles of your grocery store for washer cleaning products. If you have a front loading washer, pay special attention to cleaning the front gasket, especially at the bottom where it's possible for moisture to settle and mold to grow.Automatic DryerMake a habit of cleaning the lint filter in your dryer once a week. It's also very important to regularly clean the dryer vent. If you're lucky you'll have a short direct vent pipe to the outside that you can clean with a vacuum -

New Appliance Finishes
Review of the Latest Appliance FinishesChoices of Appliance Finishes Abound at UAKCThe last half of the 20th century began with most appliances having porcelain enamel on steel cabinets. Porcelain was durable and easy to clean, but the manufacturing process was expensive, porcelain was subject to chipping, and was not environmentally friendly. Eventually, porcelain enamel disappeared in appliance cabinets to be replaced by steel with powder coat painted exteriors or stainless steel. In the last decade, we've begun to see some different choices in appliance exteriors. While painted surfaces remain a standard for base appliances, more expensive stainless steel is enormously popular. In recent years, we've seen new smudge-proof Frigidaire and fingerprint resistant stainless steel in Maytag brand and others. They're still stainless steel, but they have properties that eliminate or greatly reduce the possibility of smudges and fingerprints. European luxury brand, Miele, has introduced a fingerprint resistant steel called CleanTouch, as a replacement to stainless steel.Even more recently, Black Stainless Steel has hit the appliance market and appears to be taking off. Black Stainless Steel is essentially stainless steel base metal with black painted finish. KitchenAid was the first to Black Stainless Steel, and it seemed to take off slowly. But now, it is available in more brands and seems to be rapidly taking hold as an alternative to the shiny stainless steel we see everywhere. Here are some of the brands that are now offering Black Stainless Steel appliances:Brands offering Black Stainless SteelKitchenAidSamsungLGDacorMaytagFrigidaire -

Perimeter Vent Hoods
Perimetric Ventilation A New Way of Venting Cooking creates smoke, odors, and airborne particulates. Vent hoods are needed to remove all this from the kitchen. For the most part, vent hoods do this with fans that pull the air from over the range or cooktop into the hood, through filters, and exhaust the air out. In the last few years, some hood suppliers have been using a perimeter suction system. Quite simply, rather than pull the air through large openings under the hood, the perimeter system creates suction by reducing the size of the openings to slits around the perimeter of the hood. Here are some of the appliance and vent hood companies now offering perimeter vent hoods: Whirlpool Whirlpool has recently introduced a chimney-style hood featuring perimeter venting with this claim: Perimetric venting technology concentrates kitchen hood suction to targeted zones on the cooktop while also reducing noise, an important feature considering that this hood has a powerful 400 CFM fan. The hood can provide even more noise reduction with the optional attic mounted in-line fan. Jenn-Air Jenn-Air was an early-adopter of the perimetric venting system with it's high fashion picture frame wall-mounted vent hood. It can be a nice focal point in the kitchen, and provides a powerful 600 cfm blower which is ideal as an accompaniment to one of Jenn-Air's powerful cooktops or ranges. Elica Speaking of fashion statements, Elica's Mini OM hood has perimeter ventilation which draws air through a narrow channel around the circular face -

New Range Hoods
Perimetric Hoods from Jenn-Air Available Now at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center When Jenn-Air launched its Super Premium appliances in 2009, one of the eye-catching products was a dramatic new vent hood. Not only did it have a striking appearance, but it incorporated a new venting methodology - Perimetric Venting. Jenn-Air and other high end brands available at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center are now offering more hoods featuring this advanced system. Here's what Jenn-Air has to say about how this venting system works: Traditional ventilation hoods are open with visible filters. By contrast, our perimetric ventilation hoods hide the filters behind a cover, and only thin openings around the cover’s edges are visible. What you may not know is that this design deliberately focuses airflow by drawing air through the thin slots. This speeds up the air to rapidly capture cooking vapors. While traditional ventilation hoods centralize the capture area directly underneath the blower motor, perimetric ventilation distributes the capture area around the edges of the cover, nearer to the edges of the ventilation hood. This helps capture cooking vapors from above the entire cooking surface. This design deliberately focuses airflow by drawing air through the thin slots... to rapidly capture cooking vapors. The combination of focused airflow and distributed capture area delivers the performance and efficiency of our perimetric ventilation while keeping its design elegant and understated. You can explore Jenn-Air's perimetric hoods and other major appliances and plumbing fixtures at Universal Appliance and Kitchen
