UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND WESTWOOD VILLAGE, CA

Westwood Village was established by the Janss Investment Company in the 1920s as a company headquarters and shopping district. The boom of Westwood Village complemented the UCLA boom, which moved to the area in 1925. The area was developed as a shopping district for the university and the residents of Westwood.

When it was opened in 1929, the design was considered to be one of the most well planned commercial areas in the nation. The company management hired architects to create a Mediterranean theme with decorative Spanish tile, patios, courtyards, and clay tile roofs. The area opened with 34 businesses with Harold Janss determining the location of each within the neighborhood. Despite the Great Depression, by 1939, there were 452 businesses in Westwood Village.

The area continued to develop and by 1999 was considered to be upscale economically. While parking is cited to be a problem, there are many shops and restaurants of all sizes with a population of almost 49,000 residents.
