UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND WESTWOOD, CA

The commercial and residential neighborhood of Westwood lies in the northern central area of the Westside region of L.A. Westwood began development in 1919, and it expanded with the new University of California campus opening in 1926.

The neighborhood was developed on the 3,000 acre Wolfskill ranch that was purchased in 1919 by Arthur Letts, the founder of Bullocks and Broadway department stores. After Lett’s death, the land was inherited by Harold Janss, his son in law who developed the area, and new homes were advertised in 1922. 

By 1925, the University of California had expanded and outgrown its site on Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, and a new campus was selected in Westwood Hills. The property was sold to the university for $1 million, less than one third of the value of the land. The state bond, Proposition 10 provided $3 million for the construction. Building commenced and the Westwood site was opened in 1929. 

Today, Westwood covers an area of 3.68 square miles with over 48,000 residents, a number of parks and recreational facilities, schools, and the Geffen Playhouse.
