UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA

Westlake Village is on the western border of Los Angeles County with a population of approximately 8,500 residents. The area that is now Westlake Village was originally settled by the Chumash Indians approximately 3,000 years ago.

When the first Europeans came to the area in 1770, Captain Gaspar de Portola and his party of Spanish explorers and missionaries camped near a Chumash village that is believed to be at the site of the present day Westlake Village. 

As part of the first Spanish land grants in 1795, the land was given to the Pico family, and the Rancho Simi grant was officially confirmed in 1842. By the time California was admitted to the union, most of the land was divided among 19 families. The future Westlake Village site was recognized as the central component of two Mexican land grants. 

The original tract of land for modern day Westlake Village, known as “Westlake” was divided by the Ventura/Los Angeles county line. Two parts of Westlake Village on the Ventura County side were annexed into Thousand Oaks in 1968 and 1972. In 1981, the Los Angeles County section was incorporated as the City of Westlake Village. Since California state law prevents cities from existing in separate counties, the areas in Ventura County were classified as Thousand Oaks. Today, many residents of Westlake don’t realize that they live within the Thousand Oaks city limits.
