UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA

Most of the historical writing about West Hollywood started in the 18th century, when European colonization as João Rodrigues Cabrilho, a Portuguese explorer arrived offshore. Approximately 5,000 of the Tongva Indian tribe inhabiting the area canoed out to greet the arrivals.

By 1780, the major connecting road for the El Pueblo de Los Angeles was what became the “Sunset Strip.” Most of this area was included in the Rancho La Brea that was eventually owned by the Henry Hancock family. At the end of the nineteenth century, West Hollywood began to take shape with the first large land development, as the town of “Sherman” was established. Sherman was the location of the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad yards, car barns, and main shops, with many of the working class railroad employees settling in the town. During this time, the city started to develop a reputation as a liquor friendly place. 

By 1925, Sherman had adopted the West Hollywood moniker, and since gambling was not legal in the city of Los Angeles, there was a proliferation of nightclubs, casinos and other businesses in West Hollywood. These businesses were immune to the possibly heavy handed law enforcement of the L.A.P.D. This attracted many people connected with movie making. 

Eventually, the extravagant nightclubs saw a drop in popularity, but the Sunset Strip continued to attract out of town tourists. Today, West Hollywood has a population of approximately 35,000 residents and is considered to be one of the largest and most prominent gay villages in the U.S.
