UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND TORRANCE, CA

Located on what used to Tongva Native American land, Torrance boasts one and a half miles of Pacific Ocean beachfront, and is part of what is known today as the South Bay, located in the larger metropolitan area of LA and part of Los Angeles County.

With a rich history going back to the Spanish Crown, in 1784, 75,000 acres of Rancho San Pedro (which encompassed today’s Torrance), was deeded to Juan José Domínguez, who was in the Spanish army.  It was subdivided 62 years later by Governor Pio Pico granting Rancho de Los Palos Verdes to José Loreto and Juan Capistrano Sepulveda in the Alta California territory of independent Mexico.

In the early 1900s, real estate developer Jared Torrance with a group of other investors, saw the economic significance of creating a mixed industrial-residential community south of metropolitan Los Angeles. They purchased part of the old Spanish land grant and hired landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr to design what would become a modern planned community.  The city was founded in October 1912 and named after Torrance himself, formally incorporating in May 1921.
