Topanga Canyon Trail

UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND TARZANA, CA

The city name of Topanga can be traced back to the Native American Tongva tribe and it may mean “a place above”. Topanga had its first European settlers in 1839 and it became a popular destination. By the 1920s Topanga Canyon was a great weekend getaway for a number of Hollywood stars who appreciated the privacy and beauty of the rolling hills and ample greenery.

During the 1960s, the area drew many new artists with many notable names living in the area including Neil Young, David Briggs and Wallace Berman. In fact, the murder campaign of the Manson family began with the murder of a Topanga resident in 1969. Gary Hinman was a music teacher who was known to open his home to anyone in need of shelter.

The Topanga Corral nightclub also attracted myriad performers including Neil Diamond, Etta James, Neil Young and the then Topanga locals Canned Heat. It is also rumored that Jim Morrison’s “Roadhouse Blues” was inspired by the drive to the Corral up Topanga Canyon Boulevard. The club was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the 1970s and featured many L.A punk scene bands. Unfortunately, a fire in 1986 destroyed the Corral and it was not rebuilt. 

Today, Topanga continues to be popular with artists and the annual Topanga Film Festival occurs each July. The organizers, the Topanga Film Institute aim to provide cultural exchange and networking opportunities to expand the community.
