Village of Sherman Oaks Van Nuys_Blvd at_Ventura

UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND SHERMAN OAKS, CA

The Sherman Oaks neighborhood was developed by Gen. Moses Hazeltine Sherman, a partner of the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Co. The company subdivided 1,000 acres of land to create Sherman Oaks and land was sold in 1927 to allow settlers to establish their homes.

Sherman Oaks has had some controversy in recent years. In 1991, homeowners petitioned to have the Sherman Oaks boundaries to be redrawn. This was similar to other neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley that had sought to attach themselves to a more affluent neighborhood or change their name due to concerns about urban blight. Residents argued that an area labeled Van Nuys was originally part of Sherman Oaks and presented property deeds from the 1960s to support their case. This dispute took years to resolve and it was only in 2009 that the Los Angeles City council decided to redraw the boundaries to include 1,800 homes that were previously classified as Van Nuys.

Today, Sherman Oaks has a population of approximately 53,000 residents with several public and private schools. There is also the Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park, which has two baseball diamonds, an auditorium, a football field, indoor and outdoor basketball courts and a community room for locals to enjoy.
