UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND SANTA MONICA, CA

The beachfront city of Santa Monica is situated on the beautiful Santa Monica Bay and has a long and colorful history. The area was inhabited by the Tongva tribe and called Kecheek in the Tongva language. In 1769, Gaspar de Portola and his party of explorers camped nearby. There are two different accounts of how the area was named. One account says it was in honor of Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine, but another says that the Kuruvungna or Serra Springs were reminiscent of Saint Monica’s tears.

In the 1870s, Santa Monica was connected to Los Angeles by the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad. This prompted growth including the Santa Monica Hotel in 1885. As amusement piers had a surge in popularity and Santa Monica developed into a famed resort town. The Pacific Park and Santa Monica Pier remain popular tourist destinations today.

Unfortunately, the Great Depression deeply hit Santa Monica and the citywide employment dropped massively, with office building and hotel owners going bankrupt. However, in 1966, the completion of the Santa Monica Freeway brought new prosperity and the city has flourished. Today, Santa Monica has a population of approximately 92,000 residents and attracts tourists and visitors who flock to enjoy the fantastic coastal Mediterranean climate.
