UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND SANTA CLARITA, CA

Santa Clarita was incorporated in 1987, but it has a history that stretches back centuries. When the Tataviam arrived in approximately AD450, Santa Clarita had its first inhabitants.

In 1842, the first documented gold discovery in California was made by Francisco Lopez. This event was memorialized in a mining claim issued by Governor Juan B. Alvarado and the discovery took place in Placerita Canyon, which was later used as the original Hollywood backlot.

The modern day Santa Clarita was originally the community of Newahall. This was named after businessman Henry Newhall, who made a fortune in the California Gold Rush after he opened up H.M Newhall & Co, a successful San Francisco auction house. Newhall also invested in railroad companies that would connect San Francisco with other cities.

After serving on the board of Southern Pacific Railroad, Newhall turned to ranching and real estate. He purchased a total of 143,000 acres from Mexican and Spanish land grants. After his death, his heirs incorporated the Newhall Land and Farming Co, the company that oversaw the developments that now make up modern day Santa Clarita.

Santa Clarita enjoyed some celebrity at the start of the 20th Century, with many stars making their homes in Santa Clarita. The Santa Clarita Valley incorporated into the City of Santa Clarita on December 15, 1987.
