UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND NORTHRIDGE, CA

Northridge is in the San Fernando Valley and home to California State University, Northridge. The community was originally named Zelzah, but in 1929 was renamed North Los Angeles to emphasize its proximity to the city. Unfortunately, this created confusion with North Hollywood and Los Angeles. At a civic leader’s suggestion, the community was renamed in 1938 to Northridge.

The history of Northridge can be traced back to the Tongva or Gabrielino people and the Spanish explorers. The territory was sold to Eulogio de Celis by the Mexican governor Pio Pico. In the 1850 Los Angeles Census, de Celis was listed as an agriculturist with real estate holdings of $20,000. In later years de Celis’ heirs split up the land, which allowed the Hawk Ranch to be developed on what is now Northridge land.

The Northridge area enjoyed rapid growth with a population of 5,500 residents by 1951. This prompted the opening of new school facilities to accommodate the new population and today Northridge has 11 public schools and 8 private schools along with the University campus.
