UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA

North Hollywood is an east San Fernando Valley neighborhood in Los Angeles. It is home to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the NoHo Arts District with municipal parks and a recreation center. North Hollywood was established in 1887 by the Lankershim Ranch Land and Water Company. It was initially called “Toluca” but was renamed “Lankershim” in 1896. The name “North Hollywood” was not in place until 1927.

North Hollywood was initially part of the Mission San Fernando Rey de España. These vast land holdings were confiscated during the Mexican rule. Isaac Lankershim assembled a group of investors to create the San Fernando Farm Homestead Association to purchase half of the Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando for its impressive agricultural potential. In 1873, Lankershim’s son took over management of the plot with future brother in law Isaac Newton Van Nuys. Van Nuys thought the land had potential for dryland farming wheat crops and to test this theory, leased land. In time, the property renamed the Los Angeles Farming and Milling Company became the largest wheat growing enterprise in the world.

In 1887 a township was established with readymade small farms offered for sale planted with trees that could survive rainless summers by relying on the high water table. Despite the brutal droughts in the 1890s, the nut and fruit farmers remained solvent.
