Newport Beach, a coastal city in southern Orange County, California, with a population of about 85,000, is renowned for its swimming-friendly beaches and sandy shores. Historically, Newport Harbor supported maritime industries but now serves primarily for recreational purposes.

Balboa Island, a popular destination, attracts visitors with its waterfront path, offering easy access to shops and restaurants via ferry.

The Upper Bay of Newport was carved by a stream during the Pleistocene period, while the Lower Bay was formed later by ocean currents that deposited sand, creating the Balboa Peninsula of Newport Beach.

Land in the Newport area was sold by the State of California for $1 per acre. The region saw a significant increase in Anglo-American settlement after 1870. This was spurred by Captain Samuel S. Dunnells, who navigated The Vaquero, a 105-ton steamer, through the upper and lower bays of Newport and unloaded its cargo, despite warnings from surveyors. This event caught the attention of James Irvine, who, along with his brother Robert Irvine and friend James McFadden, decided to name the new port “Newport,” giving Newport Beach its name. McFadden went on to build the long McFadden Wharf in 1888.

Newport Harbor, a semi-artificial harbor, was created by dredging Newport Bay in the early 1900s. The harbor now includes several artificial islands covered with private homes: Newport Island, Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island, Collins Island, Bay Island, Harbor Island, Lido Isle, and Linda Isle.

Originally supporting maritime industries like boatbuilding, shipbuilding, and commercial fishing, Newport Harbor has transitioned to being predominantly used for recreational activities. Its shores are lined with private homes and docks. With approximately 9,000 boats, it is one of the largest recreational boat harbors on the U.S. West Coast.

Newport Beach has been a popular destination for beachgoers since the Pacific Electric Railway started bringing visitors in 1905. The city’s attractions include its beaches stretching from the Santa Ana River to the tip of the Balboa Peninsula, Corona del Mar State Beach, and Crystal Cove State Park’s beaches. It is particularly known for its excellent surfing conditions, especially between Newport Pier and the Santa Ana River. The Wedge, at the Balboa Peninsula’s tip, is famous for world-class bodyboarding and bodysurfing. Newport Pier and Balboa Pier are popular spots for fishing and sightseeing, and a 2.9-mile (4.7 km) boardwalk for pedestrians and bikers extends from 36th Street in West Newport, past the two piers, to between E and F Streets on the Balboa Peninsula.
