UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND MOORPARK, CA

Moorpark, in Ventura County, California, was established in 1900. From just over 4,000 residents in 1980, its population surged to over 25,000 by 1990, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Ventura County by 2006. The 2010 census reported a population of 34,421, an increase from 31,415 in 2000.

The town’s name likely originates from the Moorpark apricot, once prevalent in the area, as reflected in the town’s seal and flag.

Initially inhabited by the Chumash people, the area was home to the Quimisac village in what is now Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park. These early residents were hunter-gatherers who engaged in trade between villages, notably controlling the region’s fused shale trade. The land later became part of the vast Rancho Simi, granted to the Pico brothers in 1795 by Governor Diego de Borica of Alta California.

Moorpark holds the distinction of being one of the first cities to utilize commercial nuclear power worldwide, following Arco, Idaho, in 1955. Highlighted on Edward R. Murrow’s “See It Now” in 1957, the Sodium Reactor Experiment conducted here produced 7.5 megawatts of electrical power until its closure in 1964.

In 1961, Julius Goldman established Egg City north of Moorpark, which became the largest chicken ranch in the United States. Despite its size and productivity, local residents often complained about odors on windy days. The farm faced challenges, including a significant cull in 1972 due to Newcastle disease, before closing in 1996. A wildfire in 2006 destroyed the remnants of Egg City.

Geographically, Moorpark is nestled in a valley shaped by the Arroyo Simi river, surrounded by flatlands, mesas, and hills, adjacent to Simi Valley. The city is bisected by Highway 118, with Old Town Moorpark north and newer residential areas south of the highway.

As of 2017, Moorpark had 12,235 jobs and generated $281 million in retail sales, with businesses primarily along the Los Angeles Avenue corridor. Historic High Street serves as a secondary retail hub.

Moorpark hosts several annual events, including the Moorpark “Country Days” parade and festival, Civil War battle reenactments, an “Apricot Festival,” a July 3rd fireworks show, and the Moorpark Film Festival. These events offer entertainment, vendor booths, and activities for families and the community.

The city boasts 20 parks equipped with various amenities, offering spaces for recreation and community engagement from dawn to dusk, with specific hours for lit facilities, the dog park, and the skatepark, catering to the diverse needs of its residents.
