Manhattan Beach, California, situated in the southwestern part of Los Angeles County, is a coastal gem known for its natural beauty and pleasant climate. It lies to the south of El Segundo, west of Hawthorne and Redondo Beach, and north of Hermosa Beach, boasting a population of 35,506 as of the 2020 census.

This charming city is one of the Beach Cities trio, alongside Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, located within the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. What sets Manhattan Beach apart is its stunning 2.1-mile-long and approximately 450-foot-wide beach, offering residents and visitors a picturesque coastal experience. The city’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean results in a uniquely moderate climate, with an average year-round high temperature of 69.1°F (20.6°C) and a low of 56.4°F (13.6°C).

Manhattan Beach has a rich history, with evidence of Native American habitation dating back as far as 7,100 years ago, primarily by the Tongva tribe. Some suggest that parts of present-day Manhattan Beach may have been used as Native American burial grounds.

Interestingly, much of the land in Manhattan Beach was once covered by exposed sand dunes, which now lie beneath the city’s infrastructure. These dunes offer residents captivating ocean views in the western parts of the city. The highest hill in Manhattan Beach reaches 244 feet and is located in the southwest region. A remnant of the original landscape can still be found at Sand Dune Park. In the 1920s, sand from Manhattan Beach was even shipped to Hawaii for beach replenishment.

The city’s coastline has also evolved over time. It used to be narrower and sloping, but from 1938 to 1989, it nearly doubled in width due to sand placement during the construction of various projects. This natural littoral flow widened Manhattan Beach’s shoreline.

To preserve the city’s coastal charm, Manhattan Beach implemented size and appearance restrictions for new property developments since 2010, limiting them to two-lot parcels. These regulations were put in place after a 16,000-square-foot oceanside home was constructed by combining three lots in 2008.
