Los Angeles is Spanish for “The Angels” is the second largest city in the United States with a population of approximately 4 million. L.A is in a large basin with mountains and the Pacific Ocean surrounding the city. The city covers an area of 469 square miles and it is the seat of L.A County.

The City of Los Angeles is at the center of the L.A metropolitan area that has 13.1 million residents, but it had far more humble beginnings. Although historically home to the Tongva and Chumash tribes, Los Angeles was claimed as part of Alta California in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez for Spain. The city wasn’t officially founded until 1781 when it was declared by Felipe de Neve, the Spanish governor. When oil was discovered in the 1890s, it brought rapid growth to the area and in 1913, the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct assured the city could continue its rapid growth.

Today, Los Angeles is considered a global city and has been ranked in the Global Cities Index as number 6 with a gross metropolitan product of $831 billion. This makes L.A the third largest metropolitan area in the world after New York and Greater Tokyo. Los Angeles is also set to host the Summer Olympics for the third time in 2028.
