UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND LOMITA, CA

The area became part of the Spanish Empire’s territories when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, commissioned by the Viceroy of New Spain, embarked on a Pacific Ocean exploration from 1542 to 1543. By 1767, it fell under the jurisdiction of the Province of the Californias, as per Spanish governance.

The vast expanse of Rancho San Pedro, totaling over 75,000 acres (300 km^2), was awarded by the Spanish Crown to the soldier Juan José Domínguez in 1784. This estate experienced various transformations in size due to partitioning among Domínguez’s heirs, sales to arriving settlers, or adjustments made during the process of legal validation with the Mexican government in 1828 and the United States government in 1858. The Domínguez family’s influence is evident in the region, including at the historical Dominguez Rancho Adobe in the unincorporated Rancho Dominguez area, just northeast of Lomita.

Lomita established a sister city partnership with Takaishi, Osaka, Japan, in October 1981.

Initially, Lomita covered a 7 square mile (18 km^2) area, but over the years, portions have been annexed by adjacent cities. One such area is “Lomita Fields,” currently known as Zamperini Field (the Torrance Municipal Airport).
