Huntington Beach, a coastal city in Orange County, is named after the American businessman Henry E. Huntington. As of the 2020 census, its population was 198,711, making it the fourth most populous city in Orange County, the most populous beach city in the county, and the seventh most populous in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Situated 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Downtown Los Angeles, it borders the Bolsa Chica Basin State Marine Conservation Area to the west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Seal Beach to the northwest, Westminster to the north, Fountain Valley to the northeast, Costa Mesa to the east, and Newport Beach to the southeast.

Known for its lengthy 9.5-mile (15.3 km) sandy beach, mild climate, outstanding surfing, and vibrant beach culture, Huntington Beach earns its nickname “Surf City” due to its consistent surf throughout the year. This is thanks to swells predominantly from the North Pacific in winter and from Southern Hemisphere storms and cyclones in the summer.

The city falls within area codes 714 and 657, except for parts of Huntington Harbour (along with the adjacent Sunset Beach community), which are in the 562 area code.

Huntington Beach features a borderline semi-arid/Mediterranean climate (Köppen BSk/Csb), with the climate type gradually changing towards the west and south. Areas like Huntington Central Park and northern Bolsa Chica usually experience the semi-arid climate type, marking the boundary of the cool summer Mediterranean climate on North America’s west coast.

Between Downtown Huntington Beach and Huntington Harbour, there’s a significant marshy wetland, much of which is safeguarded within the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. This reserve underwent a $110 million restoration completed in 2006, making it a haven for bird watchers and photographers.

South of Downtown, the Talbert, Brookhurst, and Magnolia Marshes near Huntington State Beach were restored in 2010.

Huntington Beach hosts numerous summer events on its beaches, including the U.S. Open of Surfing south of the pier. It’s also a stop on the AVP beach volleyball tour. The Bolsa Chica & Huntington State Beach Lifeguards organize a duathlon (swim/run) in July, starting at the Santa Ana River Jetties and ending at Warner Avenue, Bolsa Chica State Beach. The Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguard program offers ocean swimming, running, and first-aid medical training to young people.

As the site of the world surfing championships held each summer, Huntington Beach is often called the “Surfing Capital of the World,” not necessarily for the wave height, but for the consistent quality of the surf, reinforcing its reputation as “Surf City.”
