UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND HOLLYWOOD, CA

Hollywood is a world famous neighborhood famed for the home of the film industry in the United States.

The name Hollywood has become shorthand for the industry and the people working within it. Hollywood began as a small community in 1870 and was consolidated into a city in 1910 as the film industry started to emerge.

The “Father” of Hollywood is H. J. Whitley, who is credited with starting 100 towns throughout the western United States. Whitley bought 480 acres with plans for a new town, but the name Hollywood was not used until 1887.

By the turn of the century Hollywood had two markets, a hotel, post office and newspaper, with a population of over 100,000. The Hollywood Hotel opened in 1902 to attract new land buyers and it became internationally known and was established as a center of civic and social life for Hollywood stars for years.

After a decline, Hollywood has seen increasing gentrification since 2000 as public planners and private enterprise has funded revitalization. This includes the Dolby Theatre that opened in 2001 and is the home of the Oscars.
