Hawthorne, situated in the southwestern part of Los Angeles County, California, belongs to the South Bay, a region encompassing seventeen cities within the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The population of Hawthorne reached 88,083 according to the 2020 US census.

Originally, Hawthorne was a portion of Rancho Sausal Redondo, a vast 22,458-acre (91 km²) tract of land granted in 1837 to Antonio Ygnacio Ávila by Juan Alvarado, the Governor of Alta California under Mexican rule. This grant encompassed what is now Playa Del Rey, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Lawndale, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Hawthorne, and Redondo Beach.

The city spans an area of 6.1 square miles (16 km²), with more than 99% being land, as reported by the United States Census Bureau.

Hawthorne is bordered by Lennox and Inglewood to the north, Athens and Gardena to the east, El Camino Village, Lawndale, and Redondo Beach to the south, and El Segundo to the west. Manhattan Beach lies at Hawthorne’s southwest corner. Westchester is northwest of Hawthorne, which also encircles the unincorporated community of Del Aire on three sides and shares a border with Westmont along Imperial Highway to the northeast.

The city encompasses the ZIP codes 90250 and 90251 and is primarily in the 310 area code, with a small section in the northeastern part of Hawthorne in the 323 area code.

Featuring a Mediterranean climate or dry-summer subtropical climate, Hawthorne enjoys abundant sunshine year-round, with an average of 263 sunny days and just 35 days of measurable precipitation each year.

By 2022, Hawthorne has emerged as a hub for the space industry, housing numerous private space-related companies, industries, and startups. The concentration of aerospace engineers and technicians, a history of prominent aerospace companies, and the presence of SpaceX have contributed to the development of a space engineering industry cluster in the city.
