UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND GLENDALE, CA

The official formation of Glendale occurred in 1884, when the residents created the townsite that had the boundaries of modern-day Harvard Street and Lexington Drive, but before then, there is a long history associated with town. The area that is now Glendale,  was originally inhabited by the Native American Tongva tribe, but in 1798 the land was granted to Jose Maria Verdugo. This Spanish army corporal had the land grant formalized by Governor Diego de Borica after Verdugo had been using the land for 14 years for grazing livestock and farming. Unlike the Mexican land grants which followed, the title of Rancho San Rafael remained with the Spanish Crown.

The Verdugo Adobe was built in 1860 by Verdugo’s grandson, Teddy Verdugo. This remains the oldest building within the Glendale area. Over time, the descendants of the family sold various parcels of the ranch land and some of these are now found in present day Highland Park, Atwater Village and Eagle Rock.

In 1904, the street car service from the Pacific Electric Railway arrived and shortly after this time, Glendale was incorporated.
