UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND GLENDALE, CA

The Glendale area has a long history. While originally inhabited by the Tongva tribe, the area was granted to Jose Maria Verdugo in 1798. Governor Diego de Borica formalized the land grant to the Spanish army corporal, which had been used for farming and grazing livestock by Verdugo since 1784. Unlike the Mexican land grants that followed, the title of the Rancho San Rafael remained with the Spanish Crown.

In 1860, the Verdugo Adobe was built by Verdugo’s grandson, Teddy Verdugo. This is the oldest building in the Glendale area. The family descendants sold various parcels of the ranch, some of these are now included in present day Eagle Rock, Highland Park and Atwater Village neighborhoods.

Glendale was officially formed in 1884, when the residents created a townsite, bounded by the modern day Lexington Drive and Harvard Street. The streetcar service arrived from the Pacific Electric Railway in 1904 and shortly after Glendale was incorporated. During this time the El Miradero estate was built by Leslie Coombs Brand and the Spanish, Indian and Moorish influenced architecture created an eye catching mansion that is now the Brand Library.
