UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND AGOURA, CA

Fillmore, a quaint city in Ventura County, California, is nestled in the fertile Santa Clara River Valley. This agricultural hub boasts rich soil and a historic downtown that emerged with the arrival of the Southern Pacific railroad in 1887, which also gave the town its name after J. A. Fillmore, a general superintendent for the railroad company. According to the 2020 census, Fillmore’s population saw a 9.4% increase to 16,419 from 15,002 in 2010.

The area’s European history dates back to 1769 when the Spanish Portola expedition, the first Europeans to explore inland California, traversed down the valley and camped near what is now Fillmore on August 11. Fray Juan Crespi, a Franciscan missionary with the expedition, had named the valley Cañada de Santa Clara, noting the expedition’s travel through the area and their encampment near a large native village.

Located at the base of the Topatopa Mountains, just below the San Cayetano peak within the Los Padres National Forest, Fillmore is a stone’s throw from the Sespe Condor Sanctuary. This sanctuary is a critical habitat for the recovery of the endangered California condor, nestled in the Topatopa range to the north.

Fillmore is renowned for its extensive orange groves, with most homes reflecting styles of cottages, bungalows, and historic residences. Over half of these homes were built after 1970, with the oldest structures concentrated in the downtown area, especially along Central Street. The western part of the city is known for its newer residential communities, while the main business activities are found along Ventura Street (Highway 126).

The local economy primarily revolves around agriculture, with a significant focus on the cultivation and packing of oranges, lemons, and avocados, as well as specimen tree farming. Additionally, there’s some row crop farming and a mix of small industry and assembly operations within Fillmore and other areas of the Santa Clara River Valley.
