In the heart of the San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica Mountains, Encino is locally known (tongue in cheek) as the Beverly Hills of the Valley. This wealthy, up-market community is flanked by Bel-Air, Sherman Oaks, Brentwood, the Sepulveda Basin, Tarzana and Reseda.

The Los County city, San Fernarndo Valley name of Encino comes from the Spanish word for oak, which populated the landscape for millennia. What makes Encino today, was first discovered during the Portola expedition, when Spanish explorers arrived in 1769. They voyaged across the Sepulveda pass, staying for two nights at the modern day Los Encino State Historic Park. Expedition member Juan Crespi, a Spanish Fransciscan missionary monk, chronicled the mission for posterity, referring to the area as “The Valley of Santa Caterina de Bononia of the Oaks.” This was abbreviatd to just Encino, but the neighborhood was not formally established until almost 100 years later in 1845. 

With over 41,000 permanent residents, modern day Encino spans 9.5 square miles, with public and private schools, recreation areas and parks. Home to the wealthy, including a number of celebrities, Encino ranks as one of the lowest population density areas of Los Angeles.
