UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND CALABASAS, CA

Like most of the general area, the Northwestern San Fernando Valley was home to Native Americans before Spanish colonization in the 18th Century. The area known today as Chatsworth was part of the 19th Century Mexican land grant and following the Mexican war, it became the largest land grant in the U.S State of California. Significant development and settlement followed.

The name of Chatsworth was first recorded in 1888 and it derived from England’s Chatsworth House. It was listed when George R Crow filed a map of the San Fernando Valley including a subdivision he titled “Chatsworth Park” with the LA County Recorder’s Office. In 1895, a new wagon route was opened to bypass the Devil’s Slide deteriorating route. This was used until the Santa Susana Pass Road was built in 1917.

Today, with its population of approximately 41,000, Chatsworth is one of the lowest densities of any LA neighborhood, but has a relatively high income level.
