Canyon Country, rich in history and culture, was the ancestral homeland of the Tataviam people for over five hundred years. Before them, it was inhabited by other tribes such as the Tongva, Kitanemuk, and Serrano.
With the arrival of the Spanish, the valley became part of the grazing lands of Mission San Fernando Rey de España around 1790. Following Mexican independence in 1834, it became a segment of the Rancho San Francisco land grant, situated near the meeting point of the Santa Clara River and Castaic Creek.
In 1987, Canyon Country united with Valencia, Newhall, and Saugus to form the city of Santa Clarita, California. Located on Santa Clarita’s east side, along the Santa Clara River, Canyon Country occupies the area east of Golden Valley Road. It is bordered by Saugus to the west and Newhall to the southwest, with the Sierra Pelona Mountains to the north and the San Gabriel Mountains to the south and east, both part of the Angeles National Forest.
Primarily falling within ZIP codes 91351 and 91387, Canyon Country’s boundary along Sierra Highway divides these codes; addresses west of or along the highway fall into 91351, while those to the east are in 91387. Portions of ZIP codes 91321, 91350, and 91390 also encompass parts of Canyon Country.
Distinguished by its diverse neighborhoods, Canyon Country has the most varied neighborhood names in Santa Clarita, often derived from natural features or historical ranches. These neighborhoods encompass a range of housing tracts, each with its unique identity.
The community enjoys access to Santa Clarita’s extensive park system. Notable parks in Canyon Country include the expansive Canyon Country Park, North Oaks Park, Discovery Park, Todd Longshore Park, Fair Oaks Park, Oak Spring Canyon Park, and Begonias Lane Park, with the latest addition being Plum Canyon Park, situated on the northern border with Saugus.
