Under Mexican territory rule, Brentwood was included in the Rancho San Vicente and Santa Monica land grants. When Mexico was defeated in 1848, the land was sold off in parcels. Over the coming years, Brentwood began to develop within the Westgate community, with many streets named for British areas.
