Agoura Hills, CA was known as Picture City in the 1920s due to Paramount Pictures using this location to shoot westerns at the Paramount Ranch. To obtain a local post office, the residents needed an official town name. The residents took inspiration from Pierre Agoure, who was a local Basque French immigrant who settled in the area as a rancher in 1871. In 1927, the town adopted the name Agoura and it is unknown if the spelling change was intentional for easier pronunciation or a typo.
The town became a city officially in 1982 with rapid growth, as it incorporated neighboring Westlake Village. Today, the city has a population of 20,000 and Agoura Hills is known for the natural spring in the Ladyface Mountain foothills, which is considered a defining geographical feature, but it is also well regarded for its live music scene.
