Located near Agoura Hills in California, the unincorporated Agoura community takes its name from the historic name of the area. This territory was mostly developed before Agoura Hills was incorporated. However, Agoura has an extensive history, as it was the “Vegar Junction” stagecoach stop and it was known as Picture City in the 1920s, since Paramount Pictures filmed outdoor scenes and western movies at the nearby Paramount Ranch.
To have its own post office, the residents in the area needed to choose a one-word town name and it was decided as Agoura in 1927. This was in tribute to Pierre Agoura, a local French Basque settler who moved to the area in 1871, styling himself as Don Pierre Agoura.
When Agoura Hills was incorporated in 1982, it left the remaining unincorporated areas to be collectively identified as Agoura.
