How to Keep Your Food Fresher for Longer
Statistics show that households in the USA throw $2,000 of spoiled food in the garbage each year on average. In these trying financial times, there is even more pressure to avoid this waste. Fortunately, there are some practical ways to keep your food fresher for longer. Make Sure Everything is in the Right Place Many of us have a habit of simply putting items in the refrigerator wherever they will fit. Unfortunately, this can compromise your produce lifespan. There are actually zones in your refrigerator, which provide optimum conditions for particular items, so you need to become familiar with the right place for each item. The temperature in the door compartments can fluctuate, so it is important that any items are resistant to spoiling. Many people place milk and cheese in the door, but this can be a mistake, as it is also the warmest spot in your refrigerator. So, you could be reducing the lifespan of your dairy and other delicate products. The door compartments should be reserved for items such as condiments, soda, juice, bottled water, and other items that can withstand the temperature fluctuations. The top shelves provide the most consistent temperatures, so you should put items that don’t need reheating or to be cooked on these shelves. For example, olives, deli meat, hummus, and even berries should be placed here. The lower shelves are the coldest place in your refrigerator, so this is the place for more sensitive items. This is the place to put eggs, -

Tips on Buying a New Freezer
Before You Buy a New FreezerReview of Many Freezer Choices Available at UAKCFull-Size FreezersIf you have a hunter in your family, live on a farm where you raise and butcher farm animals, or simply buy in bulk, then you may be a candidate for a full-sized freezer. It's great to have a utility room or other inside space for your freezer. Unfortunately though, it's often necessary to put your freezer in the garage. The downside of this is temperature variations may cause the freezer to work harder, and use more energy. Most likely you'll choose between a chest freezer and an upright freezer. Obviously, a chest freezer will take more floor space, and you may have to dig a little to find what you need, but chest freezers are less expensive. With an upright freezer, you'll have multiple shelves, and it will be easier to view and access the contents. Upright freezers are more expensive, and cost a bit more to run.Inside All Freezer optionsHaving All Refrigerators and All Freezers in the kitchen has become increasingly popular. Frigidaire has offered this option for a long time. The photo above is the latest offering of a matching refrigerator/freezer pair from Frigidaire Professional. Other brands such as Miele, Thermador, and Sub Zero also make various Column configurations of separate refrigerators and freezers. Dacor has now jumped on the band wagon with their high tech columns. The all refrigerator/all freezer is definitely worth consideration for a complete food preservation solution if you have -

The Disappearing Refrigerator
Sub-Zero Integrated Refrigerators and FreezersLet's begin by setting the record straight on built-in refrigerators with cabinet panels, versus fully integrated refrigerators with cabinet panels that are flush with adjacent cabinets. The Sub-Zero brand pioneered built-in refrigerators decades ago, and continues to be a leader in this appliance category. They have long had cabinet panel options for their refrigerators, but not what we now call "fully-integrated". In fact, Sub-Zero typically exposed their trademark grills on top of the refrigerator where the compressor compartment was located. They still make these refrigerators, and they are very popular. However, today's fully-integrated refrigerators with custom flush-fitting matching cabinet panels, are indistinguishable from the adjacent cabinets. They're often referred to as invisible or disappearing refrigerators.A few years ago, Sub-Zero Wolf embarked on a major re-design of their entire appliance offering. This update included a complete launch of integrated refrigerators, freezers, and wine storage units, accompanied by undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawers, as well as undercounter beverage and wine storage units. Here are some of Sub Zero's latest products in their own words: How often have you wished for a larger refrigerator? Weekly? Daily? We invite you to think modular and solve your food storage problems once and for all. The Sub-Zero Integrated 24” All Refrigerator Column delivers an impressive 12.9 cu. ft. of well-organized refrigerator storage – likely at least 50% more than you have now. Pair it -

KBIS 2016 New Appliances
IBS/KBIS 2016 more new products...and one more thingLiebherr Under Counter Slide-Out RefrigeratorComing Soon to Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterIt's no secret that there is considerable growth in the undercounter appliance category. At the January 2016 Kitchen and Bath Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas Liebherr showed a unique "pull-out" undercounter refrigerator. Here's what they said about the UPR 503:"The new UPR 503 undercounter pull-out refrigerator ensures that fresh food is always within reach. Combining high energy efficiency with optimal storage space, the UPR 503 can be adjusted in height to match that of the countertop for perfect alignment with your kitchen design. The UPR 503 offers maximum ease-of-use thanks to its SoftTelescopic system of self-retracting and fully-extendable tiered storage compartments. This is the perfect space-saving addition for any kitchen or living area."The growth in the undercounter appliance category is a reflection of the practicality and the increasing need for accessibility for everyone. This includes our largest demographic group, baby-boomers, as well as all those in our population who for any number of reasons don't have easy reach for food stored higher than counter height. While at one time, most under counter refrigerator products were inexpensive fridges for college dorm rooms, major luxury and specialty brands such as Sub Zero and U-line, and now Liebherr are recognizing that accessible is not age or price point driven, but need driven. Regardless of your interest in undercounter refrigerators or other major appliances and plumbing fixtures, you're sure to find what you need at Universal -

Undercounter Appliances Gaining Popularity
Appliances that Fit Under Your Countertops Visit Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center Not long ago the only appliances placed underneath a counter in most homes were the dishwasher and perhaps a trash compactor. Now, there are a host of appliances configured to fit underneath the counter. In fact, it's hard to think of a major appliance category that does not have products configured to work under a countertop. Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center has a huge selection of appliances from many brands that will fit under your countertop. Among the reasons to install an appliance under a counter, would be not only to save counter space, but also for accessibility. It's also good to remember that the cabinets above your countertop are only 12" deep, not the 24" that most appliances are designed to occupy. Microwave ovens are no longer relegated to the countertop or over the range. Today, microwave oven drawers open and close at the push of a button and are perfect for undercounter installation. In addition, the big kitchen refrigerator is being replaced or at least supplemented with refrigerator and freezer drawers.Sub Zero has recently introduced a host of new undercounter refrigeration appliances that are also designed for living spaces other than the kitchen. The phrase that is being used is "point-of-use" appliances. For example, it might be a good idea to have a refrigerator in a recreation area stocked with snacks and drinks for the kids. Entertainment areas are being equipped -

Kitchen Remodeling Advice from UAKC
Three kitchen remodeling tips that can save you money Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC) is not just Southern California headquarters for major appliances and plumbing fixtures. Their professional staff will help you avoid costly mistakes by assisting you in purchasing appliances that will fit in your kitchen and work with your surrounding cabinets and countertops. Here are three remodeling tips and some advice on saving money by getting the right appliances for your kitchen remodel: Tile under your dishwasher. If you are installing a new floor in the kitchen make sure that you install flooring underneath the dishwasher. Installing flooring in front of the dishwasher, but not under it will likely mean that you won't be able to remove the dishwasher without pulling up the floor in front. This is a common problem that can be avoided if the flooring is installed under the appliance. This advice holds true for other undercounter appliances such as trash compactor, refrigerator drawers, etc. Double check appliance clearance dimensions. It's not enough to determine just the width and depth of your appliances. Review door swings and clearances to make sure that the appliance will open fully without hitting adjacent countertops, cabinets or walls. If your refrigerator has an adjacent wall, make sure that the refrigerator door will swing wide enough so that you can fully extend any interior refrigerator drawers. Be aware of corner cabinet drawers. Many cabinet drawers these days are full extension. Since most kitchen cabinets are at least 22 inches -

Turning the Work Triangle around with Sub Zero Refrigerators and Freezers
Sub-Zero's anywhere refrigerators and FreezersSub-Zero Headquarters at Universal Appliance and Kitchen CenterThe Work TriangleFor decades designers have been taught and have been teaching about a work triangle in the kitchen. A place to cook food (range or oven), a place to store food (refrigerator), and a place to prepare food (sink). The idea was that these points are connected by an imaginary line forming a triangle and should be in somewhat close (but not too close) proximity.Recently, the work triangle has been challenged by the notion that it might make sense to locate refrigerator or freezer drawers to be placed in a pantry area for example. Beer and wine might be kept cool in an entertainment area, and kids could access fruit and snacks from an undercounter refrigerator located in a rec room. Designers now feel free to adapt the idea of the work triangle to the notion of activity flows. With their new integrated refrigerator line Sub-Zero is promoting the "Anywhere" refrigerator. It's perhaps not revolutionary, but certainly evolutionary as Sub-Zero's new refrigerator lineup makes it easier and more practical to locate refrigerators freezers and wine storage nearer the point of use than in a traditional work triangle. Here are some of the new appliances from Sub-Zero that can expand your work triangle. Find out more at Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center (UAKC).ID-24R Refrigerator and ID-24FI Freezer DrawersThe all-new Sub-Zero lineup of Integrated refrigeration includes the widest range of models of any brand, including
