Kitchen Remodeling Tips #3: Lighting
Ideas for Kitchen Lighting 4 Ways to Brighten Your Kitchen Your kitchen needs lighting. Natural lighting is wonderful, but most kitchens don't have much natural light. Even kitchens with abundant natural light are going to need lighting for dark nights and stormy days. Here's where to start: This kitchen has a combination of natural light, ceiling light, undercabinet lights, and hanging light. None would be sufficient on its own, but the combination works nicely together. Let's take a look at kitchen lighting options. Ceiling Lights It's very common for kitchens to have ceiling lights. However, ceiling lights tend to be harsh and they almost always need supplemental lighting. Undercabinet Lighting Lights positioned under the upper wall cabinets can be used to highlight the backsplash and/or to light the countertop workspace. This can be an inexpensive way to beautify your kitchen and add needed light at the same time. Hanging Lights Pendant or rope lights hanging from the ceiling are eye-catching and offer great spot lighting on work or eating areas. In this instance, the industrial looking hanging lights provide focus to the island and great lighting over the eating area. Appliance Lights Don't overlook the lights on your appliances. A range backsplash usually has a worklight, and a refrigerator dispenser may have a handy light that also can serve as a nightlight. An over-the-range microwave is assured to have lights that shine down on the range surface below. Regardless of what kind of range hood you have, you're almost assured -

2014 Kitchens
3 Kitchen Trends in 2014 Here's what has been trending in kitchen design: Contrast A little more than a decade ago appliance manufacturers called it white-on-white. White appliances with chrome trim had been de rigueur for years, so the early movement to solid white was a big deal in the beginning of the last decade. Kitchen cabinets, countertops, sinks and even faucets contributed to the solid white kitchen. Even today, an all-white kitchen is not unusual or out of place. However, for several years, we've seen the ever popular white kitchen complemented with contrasting yet subdued colors, in particular grey. Now, contrast is becoming more bold with black showing up in islands and base cabinets, stainless steel sinks, and chrome, or even gold faucets. Color Along with non-white cabinets, sinks, and faucets, 2014 saw more solid contrasting colors on kitchen walls not just gray or black, but also bright colors and pastel shades. Thanks to specialty appliance manufacturers such as Smeg, BlueStar, Bertazzoni, and even Viking, many appliance color options are now available even though stainless steel continues to dominate. Changes in upper cabinets and islands. Upper cabinets are sometimes being replaced by shelves, and occasionally disappearing entirely. See the limited use of upper wall cabinets in the photo above. Islands have been around for a long time, but we're seeing more use of islands for seating, and even tables and chairs as substitutes for islands. What can we expect in 2015? There will be more of the same as -

Microwave Ovens in a Kitchen Island
Installing a microwave in a kitchen Island. Utilizing an island for kitchen appliances is often just a case of good space planning. Designers are increasingly installing microwave ovens in the kitchen island. Microwave ovens can be problematic against a wall where upper cabinets a) may not make sense ergonomically, and b) don't fit in a standard 12" deep cabinet. The island turns out to be a logical and convenient location for a microwave oven. The easily accessible microwave oven under the counter is a good example of universal design at work. Consumers can choose from an inexpensive countertop microwave with trim kit, or if they don't like the side swing door, several manufacturers offer built-in options with drop down doors. Some companies even have microwave ovens which have a motorized drawer. Here are three brands that offer good options for island microwaves: KitchenAid KitchenAid offers a choice of built-in microwave ovens that can work nicely in an island. The oven below is a 24" wide oven that comes with a 27", and 30" trim kit so that it can work in a 24", 27", or 30" cabinet. KitchenAid also offers a very powerful built-in Micro-Convection oven that is available in a 240v. version.Sharp Sharp is a leader in microwave ovens and pioneered the microwave drawer. They also source microwave drawers for a number of other leading brands. The Sharp microwave drawer is available in both a 27" and 30" version. [caption id=""
