A Primer on Washing Machines
Choosing the Best WasherGetting ready to buy a new washing machine? Here is the first decision you'll need to make. There are three basic types of washers to choose from. We describe each washer type below and provide an example from each of the three major brands.1. GE Traditional Agitator Type Top Loader WasherAgitator type washers were the primary type of washing machine used in the U.S. since the post WWII era up to the 2000's. They're still a popular choice for those who want a washing machine like Mom used to have and prefer the high-post agitator in the middle. Here's an example from GE.GE® 4.2 DOE cu. ft. stainless steel capacity washerGTW485ASJWS ENERGY STAR® qualified Stain PreTreat Speed Wash Rotary electronic controls with cycle status lights2. Whirlpool HE Top Load WasherHigh Efficiency top load washers have been around for about twenty years. They're absent the high post agitator of traditional washers. Instead, they have an impeller in the bottom of the tub that turns and moves the clothes in much less water than traditional agitator top loaders, but they still do an amazing job of cleaning clothes. Below is a Whirlpool HE Top Load Washer:4.3 cu. ft. High-Efficiency Top Load Washer with a Low-Profile Impeller Model #: WTW5000DWPresoak Option Deep Water Wash Cycle Clean Washer Cycle with affresh® Washer Cleaner Smooth Wave Stainless Steel Wash Basket Quick Wash Cycle 3. Appliance Finishes and Colors
Are Stainless Steel Appliances on the way out?Don't bet against Stainless SteelEvery so often we hear some predictions that stainless steel is on the way out as an appliance finish. Is that like to happen soon? No. Stainless steel is going to be the top choice for appliance buyers for years to come. Here's how it stands today:New constructionProduction home builders usually offer a base appliance package in white or black with an upgrade to stainless steel. Upgrading to stainless steel appliances continues to be a very popular choice for new home buyers.Custom homesProfessional/Restaurant style appliances are a top choice for custom homes buyers. Several of the top brands in this category only offer stainless steel, though some color selection is an option for Viking and Bertazzoni brands. (BlueStar, a pro-style line of cooking products has a very wide selection of colors.) In addition some elite luxury brands such as Le Cornue offer a selection of designer colors.Remodels and replacement salesCustomers who choose to replace their kitchen appliances from the popular entry level appliance brands, eg. GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire, available in white, black or stainless steel will almost always upgrade to stainless steel (except for basic apartment replacement sales). Though premium brands such as KitchenAid, GE Profile, or Bosch may be available in white and/or black, their sales skew heavily toward stainless steel. Kitchenaid has recently introduced a finish called black stainless steel that is getting a lot of attention.Whatever -

Paralysis by Analysis
Deciding on a new appliance.UAKC can help you make the right decision.Recently, I wanted to buy an additional monitor for my office computer setup. I shopped around, and knew the prices, features, and sizes that would work for me. Yet, I agonized endlessly over this model or that, and I just couldn't decide. Suddenly, it struck me that I spent less time deciding over a new car that costs tens of thousands than over an inexpensive electronic device that cost only a few hundred dollars. Why was I spending all this time debating back and forth over something that cost so little? This is called paralysis by analysis. To one degree or another, we all have it. If you need a new refrigerator, a washer and dryer, or even an entire suite of kitchen appliances, you don't want to make a mistake....but, you also don't want to needlessly deny yourself these new appliances just because of your paralysis by analysis syndrome. Here's a suggestion: Call or visit Universal Appliance and Kitchen Center. I've know these folks for a long time (long before I began writing these blogs). They won't waste your time. They are very knowledgeable. Tell them what your situation is, and in no time at all they'll make a few recommendations. They'll try to match your requests for brand, quality level, pricing, etc. with the best overall choices that fit your needs. With their large selection of brands, and great pricing you really won't need to be shopping around. You can -

Sous Vide Cooking
Sous VideThe old and new trend in cooking - Sous VideTracing its beginning to the 17th century, Sous Vide was re-discovered in the 20th century, and has made a big comeback. Sous Vide translates literally from the French to Under Vacuum. The modern technique involves vacuum sealing food in plastic bags, and precisely cooking for a long time at low temperatures. The outcome is a flavor-intense dish with a freshly cooked taste, vividly colored vegetables, and new texture and taste sensations. Two French chefs, Bruno Goussault and Georges Pralus independently began developing the modern Sous Vide techniques in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Today Sous Vide cooking is common in the Michelen Star rated restaurant Le Meurice in Paris, Charlie Trotter's in Chicago, as well as Thomas Keller's, The French Laundry in Yountville, CA. and Per Se in New York, NY.Home cooking Sous Vide requires a vacuum sealer, an immersion circulator, and a pot. Thomas Keller has written a cookbook with Sous Vide techniques and recipes appropriately called Under Pressure. I'd also recommend the YouTube Videos produced by Top Chef winner, Michael Voltaggio (just search for Michael Voltaggio). He has a very good 3-video series on Sous Vide chicken. At the 2015 Kitchen and Bath International Show (KBIS), GE® Appliances previewed an all-in-one Sous Vide solution. It's a new induction cooktop pre-programmed for Sous Vide. It requires an optional Immersion Circulator ($150) which connects with the cooktop via Bluetooth. If you're remodeling your kitchen or considering a new cooktop, -

New Ranges at UAKC
New Slide-In Ranges from GE, Electrolux, and Jenn-AIr What's a slide-in range? Traditionally, there have been significant differences between a slide-in range and a freestanding range. Slide-in ranges normally have unfinished sides because, just like wall ovens or drop-in ranges, slide-in ranges are designed to be installed into adjacent cabinets, and their sides are not visible. In addition, slide-in range tops are not designed to go all the way to the back wall. As you can see in the Electrolux diagram, a strip of the countertop extends along the back wall, giving a built-in look as well as the ability to run countertop molding across the back improving sightlines. The cooking surface or range top trim is designed to overlap adjacent countertops. The idea is to give the appliance a built-in look suggesting that the cooktop and range were completely separate items. Today, things are changing. The GE Profile double oven range featured below meets only 1 of the 3 definitions, the top surface overlaps the countertop, but the range has finsihed sides, and the range top goes all the way to the back wall so that no countertop or trim strip across the back can be accommodated. The Electrolux appears to be a true slide-in range. And the new Jenn-Air (coming Dec. 1), is really a freestanding range that looks very much like a slide-in range. What does all this mean for you? More choice. If you really need a true slide-in with the countertop running across the back
